Welcome to the Edlow Lab

We use preclinical mouse models, human samples, and electronic health record data to evaluate the impact of maternal immune activation on fetoplacental development and offspring outcomes

Our Mission

To improve the health and evidence-based delivery of care to pregnant patients and the developing fetus and infant.

Who We Are

Andrea Edlow, MD, MSc, is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard Medical School and a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she is the Vice Chair of Research for the Department of OB/Gyn.

The Edlow laboratory uses human samples from both uncomplicated and complex pregnancies to investigate maternal and fetal immune activation. We aim to understand how maternal health, prenatal exposures, fetal sex, infection, and vaccination shape immune responses and influence fetal development. We hope to inform interventions that will protect pregnant individuals and their babies.

We have enrolled over 2,000 participants in research studies and collected more than 8,000 samples across pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum, in order to answer questions that can directly impact (and improve!) patient care.

Key Areas of Interest

Ultimately, our research aims to identify targets for lifestyle and behavioral interventions and to inform prenatal therapies that enhance protection for both pregnant individuals and their babies.
